After School Activities Descriptions
*Clubs are non-refundable after September 12th, 2025*
1. Acting: Scenes and Monologues – Is offered by Janet Stoneburner. Delve into acting by learning and applying skills to an assortment of scenes and monologues. This class will also teach students how to prepare for auditions. A great fit for beginners and experienced actors.
2. Band Club-Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Hilde for 5th-8th grade students (4th grade on approval). Students may play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or euphonium. Instrument rentals from local music stores are about $25/month. Students are required to come prepared and submit a weekly video of their playing assignments. This is a yearlong club. Please do not take a spot if you are not committed to having your child participate the full year. Students are required to perform in one concert in December and two in the spring. Please contact Alisha Hilde with any questions on 720-1060.
3. Chinese Club - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Sanders. The course is conducted in Mandarin and follows the YCT Singapore curriculum. I cover one lesson every two weeks, incorporating Pinyin and Chinese character writing along the way. During festive seasons, I will also introduce aspects of traditional Chinese culture. I kindly ask parents to ensure that your child has a genuine interest in learning Chinese before enrolling in the club. If your child needs to take leave, please try to inform us at least one week in advance. I will provide some learning materials for home study to help them keep up with the progress.
4. Choir Ensemble- Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Herr Downie. The Choir Ensemble is a vocal performance group for 4th-8th grade students and is considered an extension of the regular choir program Herr Downie teaches during the school day. Students must sign up for both days available for their grade level. During the fall semester, Choir Ensemble will not begin until after Labor Day.
5. Cub Scouts – Cub Scouts is a family-oriented club with weekly den meetings during club times, and a monthly pack meeting. Cub Scouts is a year-long commitment. The cost for this club is $65 per semester plus an annual $170 scout fee paid directly to the BSA. Club fees cover den dues, achievement belt loops and patches, and other materials. 6. Creative Club - Is offered by Frau Cassidy Kramer. Join our creative club and explore a variety of fun hobbies like crochet, air-dry clay, Alaskan Native beading, sewing, soap carving, and so much more! You’ll have the chance to tap into your imagination and express yourself through the things you create. Together, we’ll learn the exciting process of brainstorming a design, bringing it to life with your hands, and finishing it up with a beautiful piece to take home and share with your family. Let’s get creative and make something amazing!
7. Creative Puppets and Marionettes Club - Is offered by The Batty Puppeteers troupe. This is an introduction to the vast world of puppetry, by exploring different types of puppets, such as hand, shadow, and marionettes. Students will learn to tell stories through creation and use of puppets, culminating in their own end-of-semester performance for family and friends.
8. D&D and Board Games Club - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Wolfe. Students will either play in a D&D campaign or participate in playing board games. Campaigns will be grouped into 3-6 students. Each meeting will allow for two campaigns to be played. Club length is 2hrs to provide time for campaigns, 3:15-5:30pm.
9. Drawing Club – Looking to develop your child’s love of art? This is the club for them. They will learn the basics of form, shadow, texture, and simple color mixing while drawing animals, people and interesting objects. Renee Morhain, a professional artist and art teacher, will lead students through fun age-appropriate drawing projects designed to teach them the basics of drawing.
10. Free Choice Club - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Herr Helgesen & Herr Koch. During this time students will have the opportunity to free play in the gym or outside depending on the weather. Students 3rd grade and up will also have the opportunity to play school appropriate games or activities on computers.
11. German Learning Games – Is offered by SamstagsSchule through Frau Jacobs. This club offers students a chance to practice and strengthen their German through games and collaborative activities. Designed for a range of learners, this club focuses on building vocabulary, reinforcing basic grammar, and encouraging spoken language in a low-pressure setting. Of course, German culture and European geography is covered as well. No matter the level of German already achieved, this club provides a supportive environment to use the language in a fun and interactive way. Come play your way to better German!

13. Improv! – Is offered by Janet Stoneburner. Come learn the basics of comedy improvisation in the style of Who's Line is it Anyway?! Students will learn a variety of improv warmups, games and scenes. This class is great for beginners and seasoned actors alike
14. Kinderkurs – Is offered by SamstagsSchule through Frau Jacobs. Kinderkurs is German for emerging language learners. This playful and immersive course introduces young learners to the German language through authentic materials, songs, rhymes, and cultural activities. Students will build vocabulary and foundational grammar skills while strengthening everyday school phrases and routines. From ‘Hallo’ to ‘Auf Wiedersehen,’ inspiring curiosity, creativity, and connection – one German word at a time!
15. Lego Club – Join Frau Becky Blankenship in building Legos along with other fun games and activities!
16. Multiplikation Auf Deutsch!– Is offered by SamstagsSchule through Frau Jacobs. Calling students in 3rd through 6th grade who have a basic but solid understanding of how multiplication works and are looking to build fluency and confidence in the times table up to 12. Designed as a review and practice club, it’s ideal for students who haven’t yet fully mastered their multiplication facts up to 12 and would benefit from extra support or need a review—in German! Each session will include reading and writing and instructions in German, helping students strengthen both math and language skills. Through interactive games, group activities, and math challenges, students will practice their facts in a playful and supportive environment. Students will also bring home information and materials for parents to encourage continued progress at home with simple tips and practice ideas (in Englisch). Come join us to multiply your skills—with numbers and German!
17. ORFF- Is a music program that follows the ORFF teaching method, offered through Rilke Clubs by Rilke music instructor, Herr Downie. The ORFF approach is a method of teaching children about music that engages their mind and body through a mixture of singing, dancing, acting, as well as the use of percussion instruments. Students must sign up for both days available for their grade level. During the fall semester, ORFF will not begin until after Labor Day.
18. Performance Band – This club is for 3rd and 4th year band students or by audition for 2nd year students. Students are required to perform 2-3 concerts each semester, a small ensemble piece in the winter, and a solo in the spring.
19. Performance Rhythm, Movement & Ballet - Is offered by Beatriz Lavagnino. This club is by invitation only for student that are interested in practicing and preforming in a dance production. Students must be able to commit to staying for the entire club time to practice for performance.
20. Production Workshop – Is offered by Janet Stoneburner. Come be in a show! This class meets once per week to learn acting skills and rehearse a short play with a performance for friends and families at the end.
21. Puzzles, Games, & Crafts - Mindfulness Club led by Frau Becky Blankenship. Club students will practice Mindfulness while working on puzzles, crafts, and a variety of games. This is a mixed ages class.
22. Quiet Homework Club - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Rinehart. Students are given the opportunity to work on homework in a quiet study environment.
23. Reading Club- - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Robertson for 3rd & 4th graders (Wednesday), and Frau Ringgenberg 5th & 6th graders (Thursday). Students will read and discuss the books on the Battle of the Books lists for their respective grades. After Battle of the books concludes, students will continue to explore and foster a love of reading.
24. Rhythm, Movement & Ballet - Is offered by Beatriz Lavagnino. This club is an introduction to rhythm, movement, and ballet.
25. Sing Kinderlieder – Is offered by SamstagsSchule through Frau Jacobs. Join us for singing and dancing while exploring the joy of music through beloved German children’s songs! In this lively and interactive club, students will sing classic and contemporary German Kinderlieder (children’s songs), supported by colorful materials and engaging activities. Each session will incorporate movement—whether it’s following simple hand motions, dancing to cheerful tunes, or learning easy choreography to go along with the music. Each session will include songs that are relevant to learning German as well as reflect the changing seasons and introduce students to cultural celebrations and traditions from Germany, such as Fasching, St. Martin’s Day, and Advent. No prior knowledge of German is needed, so this is also perfect for new Kindergarten students—just a love for music and movement! Sing Kinderlieder helps children develop musicality, rhythm, and language skills while having fun and connecting with another culture. Come sing, move, and celebrate learning German!
26. Smart Start- Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Herr Helgesen before school. The club is housed in the gym and provides an opportunity for students to exercise, work on homework, and engage in cooperative play.
27. Social Club – Is offered by Rilke Clubs through various Rilke Schule teachers and Rilke Clubs staff. Social Club is a wonderful opportunity for students to continue their social/emotional development through playing games, drawing, and reading with their friends! This will help students learn how to communicate with others, how to share, and how to manage their emotions during social activities. Students will also be able to complete their homework with the help of a teacher and/or engage in other academic activities. Students will be grouped by age and grade level.
28. Table Tennis - Is offered by Rilke Clubs through Frau Sanders. Students should be between 7 and 12 years old. If the student is over 12 but has prior tennis experience, they are also welcome to join. Students are required to bring their own paddle. Students should wear sports shoes and bring their own water bottle. The course includes warm-ups, systematic balance and coordination training, and exercises to improve ball control and feel. The training emphasizes proper form and body coordination. We also focus on developing sportsmanship and respect for coaches, teammates, and opponents. To the parents——If you're considering signing up, please note that some practice time at home will be required each week. Most importantly, please respect your child’s willingness to participate.
29. Theatre Games – Is offered by Janet Stoneburner. Perfect for younger actors, students will learn basic acting skills through storytelling, theatre games, puppets and improvisation.
30. Watercolor Club - Looking to develop your child’s creativity? This is the club for them. They will learn the basics of watercolor, how to create texture, and simple color mixing while painting animals, landscapes and different objects. Renee Morhain, a professional artist and art teacher, will lead students through fun age-appropriate painting projects designed to teach them the basics of watercolor.
31. Wu Tan Kung Fu – (K-6) Is offered by Sifu Kevin Walle from Wu Tan Kung Fu and Tai Chi Institute. Students will be taught basic movements and exercises from various traditional Chinese Martial Arts (including Praying Mantis, Tsung I, and Tai Chi). The class is designed to be a fun introduction into the arts as well as a good way to develop body awareness and self-confidence. No special gear is needed but indoor shoes that are not restrictive of the ankles are recommended (no boots). It will be a very physically active class - please give your children extra snacks to eat first 5 minutes of club time. Sifu Kevin has been training in Traditional Chinese Martial Arts since 1988; ran a kung fu school for 11 years in Darwin Australia; currently is senior Instructor at Wu Tan Kung Fu and Tai Chi Institute here in Anchorage.
